When hiring retail security for your premises, you only want the best – we understand!
Choosing the best includes ensuring all security guards have skills and personality traits that are beneficial and a solid, training-led background in the industry.
But what training must a retail security guard complete? Read on to find out.
Legally binding training requirements
All retail security guards must hold a valid SIA Door Supervisor Licence – a legal requirement for all front-line roles in private security across the UK.
Renewable every 3 years, SIA-licensed security guards can work in a range of establishments, including, but not limited to:
- Pubs and bars
- Shops, shopping centres, and malls
- Offices and other commercial buildings
Making them well-qualified to work in pretty much any location you could need them in.
What does an SIA Licence involve?
Anyone holding an SIA Licence has undergone detailed identity and criminal record checks, as conducted by the SIA – ensuring they are who they say they are, have no criminal record, and (perhaps most importantly) have no links to organised crime.
Each SIA course is made up of 4 modules with corresponding written exams and a variety of physical assessments. Modules include:
- Principles of Working in The Private Security Industry
This module covers the essentials for working in the private security industry: the legal aspects, health and safety for private security operatives, fire safety awareness, emergency procedures, communication skills, and customer care.
- Principles of Working as a Door Supervisor
Unit 2 includes behavioural standards, civil and criminal law, searching, arrest, drugs awareness, recording incidents and crime scene preservation, licensing law, and emergency procedures.
- Application of Conflict Management for The Private Security Industry
Module 3 includes fundamental conflict management skills and practices, including avoiding conflict and reducing personal risk, defusing conflicts, resolving and learning from conflicts, and application of communication skills and conflict management for door supervisors.
- Application of Physical Intervention in the Private Security Industry
The fourth and final unit comprises an introduction to physical intervention skills and the relevant need-to-know legislation that ensures physical intervention is always legal, justified, and uses the minimum necessary force.
These modules are designed to equip all retail security guards with all the skills they will need to keep your retail premises, staff, stock, and customers safe – giving you peace of mind and helping to stop instances of crime and anti-social behaviour.
